Alappuzha is the. administrative headquarters of the district of the same name. It is known for its crisscrossed water ways, and has a number of lagoons and beaches which makes boats and canoes a frequent mode of transportation in this district. Due to this, it is known as the Venice capital of Kerala. The back waters of Alappuzha is the most important tourist destination in Kerala. Boat races
Every year, on the second Saturday of August, a boat race known as the Nehru trophy boat race is held in Punnamada Lake,. This is the most competitive boat race in India. The boat race was started in 1952, and has attracted tourists to Alappuzha from all over the world. The participants of this boat race compete fiercely to come out on top. it is a matter of great pride, for villagers, to achieve victory to this race.
Temples
There are a number of historic temples, mosques and churches located in the district. The Ambalappuzha Sri Krishna Temple. This temple was build during 15th – 17th AD by the local ruler Chembakasserry Pooradam Thirunal-Devanarayanan Thampuran. Mannarasala Sree Nagaraja Temple is a twmple dedicated to the God Nagaraja. this temple has 30000 images of snakes, along the path and on some trees. Thakazhy Sree Dharma Sastha Temple is situated in Thakazhy, Alappuzha. This Temple is dedicated to Lord Ayappan. who faces East. There are no sub deities in the Temple.
Kuttanad backwaters
Kuttanad is a region , covering the Alappuzha and Kottayam districts. This place has the lowest altitude in India, and is one of the very few places in the world, where farming is carried out 4 to 10 feet below the sea level. Vembanad lake, which is the largest lake in Kerala, is a prominent tourist attraction, there are hundreds of resorts located on the banks of this lake. The Kumarkom bird sanctuary is located in the east coast of the lake. Boating through the lake, brings to view great scenery of the natural wilderness of Alappuzha. Kuttanad is a great place to experience first hand , the local cuisines.
Alappuzha beach
Alappuzha beach is a beach in Alappuzha district. It is a major tourist attraction. There are many festivals that take place on the beach every year. This beach has a 150 year old pier that extends out into the sea. The Alappuzha lighthouse is also situated near to the beach. During new year celebration, Alappuzha beach festival takes place. In 2015, Kerala's first sand art festival took place on this beach, Many international sand artists, came to compete in the competition. It is a great place for foreigners to visit. Visiting the beach, helps to get a deep insight of the local fishermen, and residents living here.
Kumarkom bird sanctuary
Kumarakon is a bird sanctuary located on the shores of the coast of the Vembanad lake. It covers an area of 14 acres. Species of birds that reside here include waterfowl, cuckoo, owl, egret, heron, cormorant, moorhen, darter, and brahminy kite, as well as the migratory Siberian crane. There are migratory birds that come here, especially from Himalayas and Siberia. Kerala Tourism Development Corporation has a resort, located in the middle of this bird sanctuary.
