Culture
Kerala has a rich heritage and culture. Kerala has a wide range of classical performing arts such as 'kathakali', 'bharathanatiyam',' kochupudi', 'thirayattam' etc. Kerala is the home of the world famous festival 'onam', which pays tribute to 'Mahabali', an ancient king who was send to the underworld by the Gods, who grew jealous of his good reputation and the admiration he received from his own people. A synthesized version of Aryan and Dravidian culture dominate Kerala. The classical dance of 'kooditattam' is classified by UNESCO as a human heritage art. 'kalarippaitu' is the traditional martial arts of Kerala.
Backwaters
The Kerala backwaters are a chain of brackish lagoons lying parallel to the Arabian sea. it is a place where fresh water from the rivers meet seawater from the Arabian sea. A special kind of boat race takes place here known as the 'vallam kali', with special 100 foot long bats that represent a hooded snake. The back waters of Kerala are home to many islands, and a rich ecosystem.
The best way to get around the backwaters is by boats, there are motorized boats as well as traditional canoes, but the whole region is connected by a network of bridges which can be accessed by cars, motorcycles and buses.
Wildlife
Kerala is home to thousands of flora and fauna species. The Indian elephant is an important part of the culture of Kerala. This place is home to six national parks including silent valley national park and 'periyar' national park(largest national park in Kerala). 'Wayanad' wildlife sanctuary situated in the district of the same name is home to a variety of animals such as the bengal tiger, deer, elephant,and the indian bison to name a few. The purple frog is a species of frog that is endemic to Kerala,others include the 'malabar civet' and the 'nilgiri tahr'.
Elephants play a vital role in the culture of India. Every year for the festival of 'Thrissur pooram', thirty three elephants are summoned, which are all decorated with golden ornaments.
Cuisines
Kerala has a wide variety of cuisines. Cooking is a sacred ritual in Kerala and as well as in many parts of India. During festivals like 'onam'., they have a special meal known as 'onam sadhya'. It includes rice, side dishes, pickles and many other dishes traditional to Kerala. Kerala has also a wide variety of non-vegetarian dishes like chicken curry, 'mathi' curry etc
Kerala is also known for 'idli' and 'dosa' which are the traditional breakfast foods of India . Rice and Tapioca form the staple foods of India. The main food serving is rice with some side dishes that is prepared from vegetables, meat or a combination of both.
